AMC 199cc gear selector return spring

Post  Dave P on Sat Jul 24, 2010 11:04 am

Hello everyone,

I'm not in the Francis-Barnett Owners Club but you were good enough to help me when I was searching for information so that I could replace the crankshaft oil seals in a friend's James Captain fitted with the AMC 199cc engine. Now I have another problem with the machine that I hope you can help with!

The gear selector return spring has broken. That is the larger of the two springs behind the selector pawl mechanism in the outer offside engine cover. The break is about two inches up on one leg, just where the spring begins to curve into the coil.

Does anyone know where I can obtain a replacement? Is there a spring from another machine that is known to fit? Alternatively, has anyone used a spring-maker to have a replacement made? Or has anyone been successful with a welded repair?

Any help/advice would be much appreciated.

Footchange Pedal Return Spring

Post  MoscowFlyer on Sat Jul 24, 2010 3:55 pm

Hi Dave, I see you have a pic of this up on eBay, that should get a result. I've looked through my amc spares books and it shows that spring to have the same part number for the 17T, 20T, and the 25T. There is a trader who makes and sells springs. In 2004 I lent him a full set of springs for the double lift stand, so he could make some. You could try him, if he has not got one he could make you one. I have no phone number only his address. Hi
Jampot spares ha a limited number of the springs under part no 041327 as I bought one recently for my 25T
Just remember the AMC lightweights had the same Gearbox internals as the 2Stroke engines the only difference is the 4 strokes had 4 differnt main shafts but I have a couple of spares of the corect one for the 2 strokes.
