plover exhaust

Post  smudge384 on Sun Feb 04, 2018 6:43 pm

Hi, is there anyone out there that can help with finding an expansion box for my '58 Plover 78.
I was told that Armors could help but they only supply the down pipe and silencer...

Smudge
If you want a close up picture or two I can take some of mine.
Regarding Armours, we ordered their system for Mrs B's Plover, 3 week delivery period, which was up last week and its not back from Chroming yet, hopefully it will be worth the wait.

Des and Exhausts

Post  piston 197 on Mon Feb 05, 2018 5:09 am

I saw Des at the Bristol show and collected the remaining club stock exhaust pipes off him there are only about half a dozen left, there has never been a supply of centre boxes for the Plover 78/86 available other than old stock as they were found, The last one i had was sold on Ebay for close to 200, they are that rare !

I recently bought a kestrel exhaust pipe and a James Cadet silencer form Des Heckle, as I have been told the exhaust boxes are hard to get. I know that this is non standard but I want to get the bike as complete as I can and usable. My Plover is approximately the same year as yours.

Armours web site mentions about the Kestrel pipe so it seems a common mod.
Des has his phone number inside the club directory.

Exhaust

Post  kerabo on Mon Feb 05, 2018 12:45 pm

I know of one member (No names mentioned) who bought a new silencer for his old built like a bridge FB. He fitted it and put the bike on his trailer to go to a show only to find it had fell of during the journey.

Lambretta

Post  piston 197 on Mon Feb 05, 2018 4:36 pm

If you google "lambretta exhaust box" you will see lots of pics of the item Lambretta LD models use, this is very similar to the FB Plover exhaust box, but obviously inlet and outlet are different, it may be possible to modify one of these.

The series II exhaust is even closer ! and has the inlet very close to where it needs to be ?

Baffled

Post  piston 197 on Wed Feb 07, 2018 4:59 pm

Bill your picture above clearly shows you have the baffle ? so in theory you do not need it ?
it is the weld on piece with all of the holes in it that sleeves up the inside of the silencer.

John

The pictures are of my Exhaust so give some idea what the correct item looks like. The one we ordered off Armours is a complete new system without the expansion tank for Irenes bike. Hers is just some old moped type set up by the look of it.
it does not say on their website about having to buy a baffle hence the confusion. At least they held their hands up and admitted the problem so well done to them for that.

Now i see

Post  piston 197 on Wed Feb 07, 2018 5:58 pm

Ah , it becomes clearer, some people have fitted the Kestrel 69 exhaust down pipe with baffle and then the silencer similar to your silencer as used with your baffle box, so presumably Armours are supplying a Kestrel type pipe and baffle tube ? and /or a silencer ?

Yup John, exactly right, it even says on their website that the Kestrel 69 silencer fits the Plover front pipe, No mention of a Baffle anywhere so the presumption is that its in the silencer.
I imagine they will make the website more clear in future.

Re: plover exhaust

Post  Rex Stewart on Wed Feb 07, 2018 9:06 pm

Bill I have bought the Kestrel pipe which is longer I think. But I got a second hand James 150 silencer from Des Heckle in the FB club. I think there is a difference in the silencer mounting between the James and the FB silencer. The James Cadet did not use the exhaust box and I believe this will fit on the FB. It is nearly 50 years since I last had a James Cadet (first bike) and cannot exactly remember how it was.

Des and I discussed the mounting and thought the James was the way to go.

Rex
You can get little clips to attach them by the look of it but I think I will weld a bracket onto the exhaust and bolt it to the rear footpeg, mind you things may change when we get it Very Happy Very Happy
