AMC 25T carb problem

Post  Sgtbiro on Fri Jan 26, 2018 3:23 pm

Hi can anyone help me i am in the process of rebuilding my 1960 cruiser 80 with the AMC 25T engine the problem i have is when i have come to refit the carb that came with the bike a Amal 389/27 it wont fit as the float chamber is fouling the engine casting, is it possible that i have the wrong carb, should i have a 389/17 or will that not make any difference really confused as like i say the carb was on the bike when i bought it but i did not see it running.

Cheers Kevin..

A 389 carb is a 389 carb, the /** number just relates to the make of vehicle it was supplied for

Spacer

Post  piston 197 on Fri Jan 26, 2018 4:12 pm

Have you got the Tufnol spacer between the carb and the cylinder barrel ? if you have about 1/4" to move the carb to stop it fouling, then you may well have this item missing, it acts as a spacer and prevents heat transfer to the carburetter from the cylinder

Carb spacer

Post  piston 197 on Fri Jan 26, 2018 4:30 pm

Kev i will have a look over the weekend if i get chance, it is unlikley, but i am sure someone like Surrey cycles will stock them ? Just had a look , they do them in a variety of bore sizes and in widths of 1/8, 1/4,1/2 and 3/4", Just google Tufnel spacers ( they have spelt Tufnol wrongly), they are 5 each , so should save me a look ?
