AMC 25T tickover

Post  william105 on Thu Nov 16, 2017 3:20 pm

Hi, I'm having trouble getting my Cruiser 80 to tick over, it starts easily but wont tick over with or without the choke and at times spits back from the carb. I have tried adjusting the air screw on the carb and it runs better with the air screw fully screwed in, checked the timing .25inch BTDC
fitted a repair kit to the amal 389 carb and checked for leaks at the carb manifold. Any suggestions
before I go to the expense of buying a new carb to try that.

Tick over

If the mixture/air screw has to be screwed right in then you are effectively cutting off fuel supply, so it is still getting fuel from somewhere with the throttle closed ?? worth checking float height? fuel level should be level with the small tit in the centre of the float bowl cover, no real way to check this other than making a perspex see through cover or drilling a small hole in the centre of an old cover . The fuel needle could be leaking due to a worn seat or the level could be wrong, level is adjusted by washers under the fuel needle seating where it screws into the main body of the carb

The fuel level on the Monoblock is. In the middle of be word Amal on be float end cap there is a pip. That is the fuel level.
Is your fuel fresh?
If everything else fails you may want to be sure that your crank seals are ok.

Yes you did but I didn't notice you had mentioned the marker.

If you go that route I have a drilled end cover

AMC 25T tickover

Post  william105 on Thu Nov 16, 2017 9:55 pm

Thanks for the advice, I will check the fuel level in the carb. The fuel is new and mixed at 30/1, the engine was said to be rebuilt and looks like it as you can see all the new gaskets but then all the gears are not selecting so perhaps it was a poor rebuild, the joy of buying untested on ebay.

It may be worth checking the carb flange is not Bowed and has the I ring in. The carb type and number.
And the jet numbers, especially the idle jet.

AMC 25T tickover

Post  william105 on Sat Dec 02, 2017 3:39 pm

Thanks for your replies, I have removed the drive side sprocket and it appears the engine has been rebuilt without the crankshaft sleeve at least on that side anyway. Anyone know of a supplier for the sleeves, I am now stripping the engine for a rebuild as if that is missing what else has he left out, strange that the engine actually ran in the first place, the crankshaft has about 1/4" end float any idea what it should be?

Engine

That's a bad mistake. It's the spacer for the sprocket one side and the rota on the other.

You could get one made. I am sure there is a fraction difference in length side to side but unable to give the size

That's a nice diagram.
I just kept flatting the fiber washer away until the level was correct. I have to say now correct it needs plenty of flooding to start easy from cold for the first few seconds and think if it were a fraction higher it may help with that.

I picked up a 25T engine out of a James at an autojumble years ago, the seller had totally stripped the engine down and was selling the parts individually, the crank/piston and a few other bits had gone by the time I came across it but near enough everything else was there. These spacers were in an ice cream tub of fasteners, I'd assume they're from the engine but cant guarantee.

Not sure which side is which but the spacer on the left measures OD 1.125"   ID 0.875"       0.549" wide

Spacer on the right has a step on the inside edge either side and measures OD 1.125"   ID 0.875"     0.478"  wide

No use to me, fell free to drop me a PM if theyre needed or just turn a new pair if you're lucky enough to have a lathe
