AMC 20T air filter

Post  rob spence on Mon Nov 13, 2017 8:15 am

I need an air filter for my 20T engine... These are available on ebay, they come in centered or offset fitting. Does anyone know which type I need?

The ones on Ebay with centred and off centre fitting are the standard AMAL filter, one of these may work, but the 20T engine uses a filter unique to the James Captain L20 and FB Falcon 87

Try to avoid a paper element. The oil spray from the fuel sprays back blocks it. Well it did on mine and it ran so rich I lost power.

Peter , not commercially, but they do turn up often enough, they are physically bigger than the STD Amal item

Filter

Post  kerabo on Mon Nov 13, 2017 12:43 pm

Hi Rob
I bought one that looked the same but has a mesh oil soak type filter. I hen managed to find the correct filter for he bike.
I had a spare but not sure if I sold it or not. I think something else may share that size as I had to have an adaptor made for it to fit the carb unless the Falcon has an adaptor.
Just checked eBay but can't see a complete mesh one now.

Slightly better but still cloth or paper under the wire.

Air filter

Post  kerabo on Tue Nov 14, 2017 2:22 pm

Not sure how foam reacts with fuel but a coarse foam may be ok.

If you could find some you could make your own wire mesh. Some older bikes don't even have a filter.

foam air filters

Post  piston 197 on Tue Nov 14, 2017 2:42 pm

All motorcross and trials bikes i had in the 70's/80's used washable foam filters and there was an aftermarket replacement called "polyair foam filters", now this was in the days of unleaded petrol, so not sure what effect modern fuel will have.
After each event you stripped them out and soaked in filter oil, allowed to drain and refitted, the oil on the foam trapped the dust and debris

Think this was with a basket case FB project I bought years ago, not 100% certain if its even from a FB? Is this the filter you're looking for?

Filter

Post  dalgrae on Wed Nov 15, 2017 2:46 pm

If you decide on a foam filter try visiting a garden centre that has an aquatic dept they should stock foam filter blocks in various sizes and from fine to coarse ,I fitted one of these filter blocks to my Bantam D14 sport some time ago ,and it has not created any problems ,if you wish you can also oil it to the help filtration ,they are a lot cheaper than k and n replacement elements ,and can be trimmed to any shape using scissors.

Regards. Colin
