Cruiser 75 / James Colonel rear sprocket

I'm soon to view a 1956 James Colonel (FB Cruiser 75 stablemate??), the seller tells me it has a one piece rear hub/sprocket. The bike was restored from parts so not sure if this is true to this model, but my question is - When it's time to replace the sprocket what do you do? Can it be machined and another fitted?

When the James Colonel and the FB cruiser 71 first came to the market, the rear sprocket and brake drum were in one piece, and to change this item involved dismantling the rear hub ( rivetted together initially and later bolted), but a right pain, so the rear wheel was modified to have a detachable sprocket which continued to be used on all subsequent Cruiser models.
Best thing is to scrap the rear wheel as it is and replace with the later type if the sprocket is U/S if ok ,continue to use until the time comes to change ?

So as you say John it can be done if you really have to. The wheels have brand new rims so would want to keep that, maybe change the hub to the later type when time comes, presuming the spoke arrangement is the same.

Are these later type hubs easily sourced?

In a word Yes ! there are plenty about, they were used on all post 1956 225/250cc Barnett and James as well as Norton Jubilee, Navigator ,AJS 14,8 and Matchless G2 and G5
