gear shift shaft O rings

gear shift shaft O rings

Post  bigfoot on Wed Oct 25, 2017 12:26 pm

Hi Bigfoot here.
I have a slight oil leak from gear shift shaft, on inspection the two O rings on shaft shot.
I have a full box of O rings, but the old ones seem to be thicker in section, any suggestions.

O rings

Yep, the replacements you have are the wrong size!!

"O" rings are identified by the diameter of the shaft they fit on, and the diameter [or thichness if you like] of the rubber the ring is made of

Metric rings are made in quite different sections from imperial ones. Measure what you got, go to any decent seal place, and they will tell you the part number of the seal, as they are specified by SAE, ISO, or BS numbers. So, for example a 3/4 shaft diameter by 1/16 cross section would be a BS018

O Rings

You can do it buy just having a selection and keep trying till you get a nice fit. O rings are pretty forgiving and will bed in within reason. Remember there are O rings on the gear indicator shaft that also leak and can look like the gear change leaking.
Also one on the kickstart shaft.
