10D non starter

Post on Sat Sep 30, 2017 6:53 pm

Hi folks
My 52 Merlin has been undergoing a rebuild for 10+ months. Now it won't start. I have fitted a brand new Villiers 3/4 carb, there is a spark and compression, but no joy. If I take the spark plug out and clean it, it seems to try to fire on the first kick but nothing after that.
Is there anything glaringly obvious that I'm missing ( not touched a 2 stroke for many decades.
Any guidance will be gratefully received.

Try to recheck the timing.
Tip a very small amount of fuel in the plug hole and if it attempts to run then the timing is ok.

Hi Rob,  I had a similar problem with a 59 Plover, it sparked and would sometimes offer to fire, the spark seemed a bit feeble so I tried a new ignition coil which solved the problem.
