Chain and Sprockets for a Falcon74

Post  ron.wright26@gmail.com on Tue Sep 26, 2017 11:28 pm

I am converting a 1956 Falcon 74 from a road bike to a trail style bike suitable for trials such as the Beamish. I need to fit a larger back sprocket to the full width 6 hole rear hub but would like to use a chain other than the regina chain which are more difficult to buy and quite expensive. I have tried a DID 426 chain but it does ride well on the original size sprockets. Any suggestions or am I confined to the regina chain.

Try Villiers Services . They were very helpful when I did a similar conversion to a Falcon 74.

chain size

Post  john87 on Sat Sep 30, 2017 2:44 pm

The chain size is 08B-1NA if it helps..

This is the same size as the reynolds 110044

THIS IS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING LIKE "420" CHAIN, NO MATTER WHO TRIES TO TELL YOU IT IS......

Chain and sprockets for Falcon 74

Post  ron.wright26@gmail.com on Sun Oct 01, 2017 1:18 pm

Villiers services do a talon rear sprocket for a 428 chain. The centre will have to be machined out to fit the rear hub. Simple question - can you use the 428 chain on the standard gearbox sprocket or do I need to change that as well. Thanks to everyone for all their help.

First off, i have one of these sprockets and ISO 08B-1 chain fits it best..

Anyway, depends what front sprocket you have. if you have the "narrow" one [110044 or 08B-1NA] then certainly not, but if you have the wide one, then yes..

How wide is the sprocket you have now?? it will be either about 5mm [and a bit] or about 7mm [and a bit!]

nearly forgot!!

If you do not mind machining things, then google "platewheels" and you will find you can have any size sprocket you like.. The narrow ones seem hard to find though. The important thing is that you need a chain with 8.5mm or thereabouts rollers, The more usual size you will be offered [when you ask for a 3/16 wide chain, or a "420" is 7.75] This is the wrong stuff..

If you contact The Chain Gang. At most shows or by phone and send a pattern they will make you any sprocket you want. I think mine was 60.00 inc a chain.

Don't go too wide as it gets close to the back of the clutch case.

Lets see a picture of the bike .

Thanks everyone for your valuable input. I will get a hold of the Chainman at Stafford and finalise what I am going to do.
