Wiring for AMC trials

Post  rob spence on Mon Sep 18, 2017 4:30 pm

Hello,
I'm building an AMC engined 20T trials bike...no lights...whats the best way to wire up the engine and is it possible to not have a battery in the set up?

No battery

Post  piston 197 on Mon Sep 18, 2017 5:36 pm

Best way is to fit a modern electrex world ignition, as the AMC engine uses a Wipac set up , one from a BSA Bantam D10,D14 B175 should be the same, no wiring no capacitor, no battery,no points just a wire from the magic box to the coil
£186 including VAT Part No STK 175 just check with them the diameter of the hole in the rotor ?

Matchless G2 scrambler

Post  Bigjim on Tue Sep 19, 2017 9:58 pm

AMC's heavy G2CS would also have used a similar wiring harness to the FB trials bikes.

Trials ignition

Post  kerabo on Fri Sep 22, 2017 4:07 pm

My 20T never fails to start easy on the Emergency setting. If your not using lights the fact it overcharges would not matter. Maybe you could pick that wiring from the diagram.
I have fitted a bantam eletrex system to a Bantam but it would need work to adapt the the 20t crank.
It would be interesting yo see how well the 20t would run with an ignition with an advance
Keep us informed please

No , definitely not Paul Powell !, he is powell8151 , the coil set up is for a 250 trials AMC with direct AC ignition, so no reason why it will not work on a 20 T

No it's me Paulfb96, the coil is out of a box of FB bits from the Branson auction, I suspected it was from one of the AMC engines but couldnt confirm it, hence the woolly description, its untested and I've no idea of the condition.
I've never seen so many FB parts in one place, there were piles of engines, mudguards, chain guards, stands, seats, tanks etc, etc. I was bidding on lots which I thought were going too cheaply and probably to the scrapyard and I ended up with 4 lots which I'm now trying to get rid of out of my garage.
The photos are of the auction not my garage.

Hi
I have a 25S engine with the AC ignition in my Cruiser 80 although I'm not riding it I start it every couple of weeks and it always starts first or second kick regardless of the state of the battery. I have changed the wiring for the lighting coils to 12 Volts and rectified for battery changing. It all seems to work fine.

Hi Peter
Sadly no prop stands, if I'd have taken a trailer I would have come back with a lot more. I was really hoping for some pre war stuff but no luck, all 50s and 60s. There was a 15T exhaust down pipe and a couple of silencers, NOS with labels but they were in a larger pile of used pipes I did not recognise, and what do you do with a pile of rusty exhausts. A box of FB chain guards which I missed went for £1 to the scrap man I think, and amongst them was one off a model 96.
It wouldn't surprise me though if the people who did buy other lots were in the FBOC and even on this site, so you never know parts may start to crop up here or on eBay.

Hi JH,
with the competition coil set presumably the coil making the spark is included within ( no external coil needed) , so the coils are only for spark and not lighting?
( I'm not really up to scratch on electrics).

Hi
This is the wiring diagram for the completion bikes. As you can see the ignition is totally separate from thr lighting coils. The ignition coil feeds a remote coil to create the spark it is nothing like the G2CS. The lightihg side is optional.
