Kestrel 69 fork seals take two.

Post  johnh on Mon Aug 21, 2017 9:24 am

Hi All,
a week ago I asked if anyone knew where I could obtain a pair of fork seals or even just one, for my Kestrel 69 as they were missing when I acquired the bike. Unfortunately I didn't get any responses so I'm guessing that they are not available anywhere and no-one has any spare, not even a worn out one.
My problem is that I don't know of another bike like mine here in Australia. I've had this since 1972 (given to me by an uncle who bought it new and used it as a farm bike.) and I've never seen another. so I have no idea what they even look like so can't replicate them.

If someone could take the time to photograph one and provide some dimensions and a brief description, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks John H

Kestrel 69 fork seals take two

Post  johnh on Mon Aug 21, 2017 10:29 am

Hi Mike, thanks for the diagram,, I've got the same manual, , its actually for the kestrel 66 , with the 125 cc motor, so there are differences to the bottom of the fork legs , but I expect the seals are the same. The difficulty is that it doesn't show actual dimensions , or how the seal is fitted or what the inside looks like. but thanks anyway. cheers John H

seal fitting

Post  piston 197 on Mon Aug 21, 2017 10:35 am

The seal is moulded/ housed in a tin cup this is a press fit onto the bottom of the fork leg, easy enough to turn something up and to fit a modern seal into, you do not get to see them anyway as the gaiter covers them.
Yes 66 and 69 seals are the same, id will be the sliding tube size, od will be slightly smaller than top section leg size, cup will be a press fit onto the top section leg tubing

Kestrel Fork Seals

Post  PeterW on Tue Aug 22, 2017 7:20 pm

Hi JohnH,

I obtained front fork seals for my Kestrel 66  from Jonathan Welch at Oil Seal UK (details below).

He was only able to supply the rubber part so I reused the tin cup by burning out the old rubber with a blow-torch.

Incidentally, there is a Kestrel 66 owner from Ballarat, Australia on this forum, namely Geoff Morehouse (forum name: “seipgam”).

By the way, I should be able to get some photos of the seal assembly if it’s any help to you? - Let me know

Cheers,

PeterW

Seal Details are:

Kestrel Fork Seals

Post  seipgam on Tue Aug 22, 2017 11:56 pm

The guy that done most of the restoration on my Kestrel 66 used a standard type lip seal as mentioned by others on the subject. Sorry but I don't have the dimensions of the seal he used.

I believe he burnt out the old seal as also mentioned.

Looks like PeterW has you covered.

Shouldn't be too difficult to sort out.

Cheers, Geoff.

Kestrel 69 fork seals

Post  johnh on Wed Aug 23, 2017 11:56 am

Thanks to everyone for assistance,
I've sent an email off to Jonathan Welch and once I get the seals, , we should be able to make up a tin cup to fit them in, as JH said, they're covered by the Gaiter so don't have to look perfectly original.
I'm driving thru Ballarat in a months time so might be able to have a look at Geoff M's Kestrel 66 while there.

thanks again cheers johnh
