Hi from Barnsley, S Yorks, UK

Post  PapaTom on Fri Aug 18, 2017 12:52 pm

I thought I would introduce myself.
I have just acquired a 1964 Falcon 87 (I think) from a friend.
The reason I say (I think) is because he has yet to find the V5.
DVLA only list the bike as a 197cc FB.
It has been stored and not run for nearly 20 years but seems to be in good fettle.
Should not take too much to get running again.
I do not plan a full restoration but a general tidy up so that I can ride it in the drier months.
Regards.
Tom

Engine size

Post  piston 197 on Fri Aug 18, 2017 2:22 pm

Hi Tom welcome to the forum, if it is a "200 AMC engine" from 1964 and a FB then yes it will be a Falcon 87, but DVLA have it wrong, it will be 199cc, the early Villiers ones were 197cc
Frame No will tell
Falcon 87
BF = 1960
CF=1961
DF =1962
EF =1963
etc, just because it is registered 1964 does not necessarily make it a 1964 bike, as sales were slow around the end of production and quite often "new" registered bikes could have been hanging around for a while

Post frame and engine No and we can give you a positive i.d.

Hi piston 197, thanks for the quick reply.
I guess it is a 63 bike.

Frame EF92032
Engine V20T 7707

Reg BFW 647B

Put reg on as someone may recognise it.

Cheers.

1963 bike

Post  piston 197 on Fri Aug 18, 2017 3:37 pm

Yes EF is 1963, ( made between August 1962 and July 1963, so may have been made as early as 1962,but registered after start of November 1964)
BFW***B numbers were issued after November 1964 so will be Nov/Dec 1964 registration, and first registered in Lincolnshire
The "V" pre-fix to the 20T engine means it was assembled for AMC at Villiers Wolverhampton rather than at there main depot in Plumstead London

Told you sales were slow around then !

Hi John,
Many thanks, again.
My buddy assures me he will find the V5 and some other literature.
He has also given me the name of the previous owner, so hoping to contact him soon.
In the meantime, could you please advise where I can purchase a workshop manual as I am new to this classic bike malarkie.
One including recommended fluids as well as the usual timing info etc..
Will try to post some pictures in the gallery when able.
Cheers.

DVLA info

Post  piston 197 on Fri Aug 18, 2017 5:57 pm

Well it is definitely registered with DVLA as it appears on their website information check, so if the V5 cannot be found a V62 application with a cheque for 25 to DVLA will get you a V5C

Strangely it shows a reg. date of March 1964, but my registration info says BFW***B numbers were issued form November 1964 ?? so info is wrong or reg date by DVLA is wrong, mind you they have it as a 197cc and that is wrong as well ! They aslo have it registered as a FRANCISBARNETT with no gap between the 2 words

I think BFW 647B is an age related number, issued about 15 years ago. I have BFW 628B on a 1963 G80CS, age related plate.

What district of Barnsley? My lot came from Dodworth. TTFN Jack

Quite possible

Post  piston 197 on Sat Aug 19, 2017 10:41 am

Yes could well be !
if they issued BFW1B in November, it is quite possible they did not get to BFW999B by the end of the year when in January 65 they would require "C" plates ( pre the August changeover) so Nos. could be unused, these could then have been re-issued to 1964 bikes as age-related plates ?? at later date and may well explain the March registration date, when the numbers were not issued until November ??

Thanks John. I knew there was a reason why I joined the forum. Thanks too to Jack. I'm from just around the corner to Dodworth near Locke park on the edge of town. Cheers. Tom

It's my understanding that BFW was never issued with a "B" suffix. That is how you can tell an age related plate. They issue ones which were never used with the combination of suffix. My Glass's Index shows BFW only issued in Aug. 1941 to Sept. 1942 (42 - 224) in Lindsey. Lincs. So you would never see a "B" plate with BFW unless it was age related.

A great place Locke Park. A real park. Park Grove was our last centre of residence. No-one left related in Barnsley now. All deed.

BFW suffix

Post  piston 197 on Sun Aug 20, 2017 9:58 am

It was also issued again in March 1972 as BFW***K ( no that is not a swear word!)
