Falcon 74 smaller wheels??

Post  Andrewwoey on Sun Aug 13, 2017 7:18 pm

As any one fitted 16" wheels to there Falcon? I have just started work on my Triumph Tiger cub. When the two bike are placed side by side, the Falcon looks huge. The Falcon is also a heavyweight compared to the Tiger cub. I am just wondering if any one as gone down the smaller wheel route? If so, what wheels were fitted?

Andy.

Wheel sizes

Post  piston 197 on Sun Aug 13, 2017 7:36 pm

Cubs came with a variety of wheel sizes 16",17" 18" in different years and in the case of trials cubs a combination of 18 and 21
The 16" wheels on a cub make it look a bit like a "boys" bike, but am sure it has advantages for the smaller rider, the 60's cubs ,sports cubs etc had 18" wheels and look a bit more like a motorcycle and less like a toy? The only other popular British light weight that I know used 16" wheels is the Ariel arrow/leader.
If 16" wheels are used on a FB Falcon ground clearance may well be an issue as will the radius of the tinwear/mudguards etc also gearing of the engine and accuracy of the speedo will be affected.
If you only have little legs ? cutting the seat foam 1" thinner will achieve the same effect, as the radius of an 18" wheel is 9" and a 16" is 8" so only 1" difference.

I just like the smaller bikes. I was just curious if anyone had gone that route. Thing that most surprised me was the weight difference.
