Villiers X1VA Engine

I am trying to remove the primary chain sprocket from the crankshaft of Villiers XIVA engine.
Can someone please confirm it is a taper fit and in theory should come off with the aid of a puller?
Also what is the role of the disc with cut outs for a C spanner behind the two pulleys?

Sprocket removal

"the engine and dynamo sprockets are screwed by means of left-hand thread to a duplex sprocket adapter. To gain access to these sprockets, first remove the crankshaft outside nut by means of it's
right hand thread, again using engine compression as resistance. The special hammertite spanner is recommended for this purpose. Now with an ordinary puller withdraw the adapter assembly from the shaft. it is secured by a plain taper only. Hold the removed assembly in the vice, remove the lock ring, by it's left-hand thread and deal similarly with the dynamo sprocket, then remove the distance piece, the drive sprocket can now be unscrewed from adapter ( left-hand thread) "

you can see from above the slotted ring you refer to is the lock nut that holds the sprockets onto the adapter
