AMC 15T kickstart action

I have just removed the outer gearbox cover on my 15T engine because although the kickstart worked it was lazy on its return stoke ,my question please is this ,one part of the spring is located in a hole in the case this hole is at approximately 9 o clock the other hole to locate the other end of the spring is in the kickstart shaft and with the kickstart back in its correct postion against its stop plate this hole is at 11 oclock meaning as it was fitted it had very little action to return the kickstart lever ,so please does this spring have to wound around a complete turn to improve its tension
