Villiers Super Sports

Post  paulfb96 on Tue Jul 18, 2017 5:24 am

OK, I believe the Villiers Super Sports 196 engine is prefixed KZ, I have a bottom end prefixed KZB, does anyone know what the B stands for?
While I'm here does anyone have a Villiers 2E engine they are willing to part with, or even just a bottom end.
Cheers

Villiers Super Sports

Hi, in a book I have the prefix for the Villiers Super Sports engine is BZ, if your engine were BZB, the B would be for "Brooklands" which were racing engines of which very few were made. Mike

Engine pre-fix

Post  piston 197 on Tue Jul 18, 2017 1:12 pm

KZB means nothing to me ? normally the 196cc Super Sports were either KZ of KZS ??
The Brooklands engines were 172cc and pre-fixed with the letter Y
so with regard to the post above it would not seem to be a Brooklands engine ?

are you sure the B is not an S ?

Yes you are quite right John, getting the Villiers Super Sports mixed up with the Villiers Super Sport TT, and meant to put "could" instead of would. Mike

Quite right John, that's how I understand it anyway, it's definitely KZB though, see pic.
I've no idea what the B means.
Any idea if a 2E barrel would work on this, same bore and stroke I think, just an idea, ideally I need a 2E bottom end though.

Barrel swap

Post  piston 197 on Tue Jul 18, 2017 4:34 pm

Yes 2E barrel will work with these crank cases, are the cases fitted with oil pipe fittings for auto-lube, I would expect supersport KZ and KZS engines to have separate oil feed and the bike they were fitted in to have a separate oil tank ?
Not sure what a KZB would have as I have never come across that designation before ?

No John, not auto lube, the plot thickens. The barrel does physically fit I just wasn't sure if it would work but I couldn't see why it wouldn't.

Possibility

Post  piston 197 on Tue Jul 18, 2017 4:54 pm

Maybe the B was a variant of the super sport engine without auto-lube ?? in other words 2E type cases with super sport top end ??

Just guessing ?

If I assume it is a Super Sports variant I guess it will have had an aluminium piston so am I right to assume I will have to use an aluminium piston if I fit the 2E barrel to avoid balance problems. The barrel needs a rebore anyway so I want to get the right piston.

Balance factor

Post  piston 197 on Wed Jul 19, 2017 6:20 pm

Paul,
I would think you are spot on there, we had a member who wanted an alloy piston in a hurry for his model 15 196cc supersports to enter into Banbury. I only had a cast iron one for the 2E, so he fitted that, it worked, but the vibration was unbearable, but it did get round, needless to say when an alloy one came along it sorted things out
