Hitchcocks Falcon

Post  falcon-reub on Sat Jul 08, 2017 7:10 pm

Hey everyone,

I've recently become the new owner of a Francis Barnett Falcon, which was owned and raced by Hitchcock's in Folkestone. I don't know a lot about the bike as it was bought at auction. Does anyone know how I can find as much info as possible about the model I have?

Engine number: 580B 2851
Frame number: 79018
Black plate fitted to front forks: BSA 737

Thanks!
Reuben

580B engine coding was used twice by Villiers
1 an 8E engine supplied to DOT ??
2 as a 9E engine supplied to Ambassador ??

So that does not help a lot

A frame No 79018 suggests a Falcon from around 1956 ?? , but as Ken says is meaningless without the letter coding in front of the numbers, which will tell its year, model and original design use ( Road,Trials,Scrambles there were no "racing " FB's of this period)

So the full frame number is WM 79018. Does that tell us what model it is?

Yes it does !

It is a 1956 Francis Barnett Falcon 74, made between September 1955 and August 1956,
It is the standard road going model which would have originally have been fitted with a 3 speed 8E 197cc engine with coding 070B *****, or 4 speed option 8E with coding 071B ****

The "racing " description is almost certainly a bit of embellishment on the truth ? and I would be surprised if there was much truth in that description ? unless it comes with copious history photographs, cup and medals I would ignore the attribution .

Thanks so much for the info JH! I'll see if I can work out which of the engines I have.
I'm not too worried about the racing attribution,I'll have a search online for some photos.
