Model 96 exhaust to silencer joint

Post  dalgrae on Sun Jun 11, 2017 2:03 pm

Can someone please advise me regarding the exhaust to silencer joint,I have just bought a new correct exhaust pipe to suit the model 96'but what I thought was an original usable silencer does not fit ,the silencer has a short stub pipe about 2 inches long coming out from the front which is exactly the same diameter as the exhaust pipe ,a photo I have managed to find seems to suggest that the exhaust pipe should just push into the front of the silencer if so how does it seal and retained to it,

Hi
Your exhaust pipe should have a small cone that the silencer pushes up against when assembled, there should be a long threaded rod on the end of your down pipe that pokes through a hole in the back of your silencer which takes a nut and holds the whole thing together.
I striped one down and took some photos but I don't know how to put photos on here, if you pm me with your email I'll send them to you.
Cheers

Hi thanks for the reply and photo,on my bike when purchased the exhaust pipe was in a poor condition and not original,it was the wrong diameter ie too big with a smaller diameter tube welded to the end that fits the barrel. As I said in my post above the exhaut pipe fitted over a short stub pipe that was brazed to the front of the silencer by what I assume is the cone you refer to,as it is brazed I am unable to remove this, with the baffle removed it is the same diameter as the exhaust,I have managed to buy a new exhaust pipe ,and will source silencer as well as to the cone I have no idea where to get one so will probably finish up making one

If you look to the right of this you should see a small box with what looks like a figure and the letters PM, just click it and away you go.
Being new you might not have access yet though and I don't know what the procedure is to get access.

Hi Paul, I think the penny has finally dropped and I believe I now sort of understand how it all goes together,ie the exhaust pipe and baffle pipe are welded together with a cone shaped washer also welded to the exhast pipe ,then it is inserted into the silencer and the threade rear rod is tightened until the cone washer seals onto the front of the silencer with the help some gasket material .

Please confirm But I would still please like a photo of the front of the silencer /pipe arrangement to confirm
