Very rare francis barnett

Post  Gyrocopter on Fri May 26, 2017 9:35 pm

I must have a very rare Francis Barnett have posted 2 post on the forum and as of yet no replies, So I must have a very rare Plover 78. All I am after is some photos with dimensions of the front footrest or the whereabouts where I can purchase these.

If you are finding the plover parts hard to find, try looking for James Cadet parts. I'm pretty sure they are basically the same thing.

Footrests

There is no ready source of footrests for this model, it will be down to trawling the internet/Ebay autojumbles etc I break Francis Barnetts with regularity when they are too far gone to save, and at this moment I do not have any Plover footrests . All of the post 1955 Falcons, cruisers Plovers ( except Cruiser 89)share the same footrest design, just the Plover ones are slightly higher rise than some of the others
A quick google of "Francis Barnett footrest images" threw up various photos

Yes the Plover 78 is a badge engineered James Cadet L15, just painted in a different colour, with different exhaust and badges, and NO it certainly is not rare !
I had not replied previously as it was only going to be to tell you I did not have any

Well Have tried e bay, and James forum, have been to auto jumbles, still no foot rests, if no one has parts for the Plover 78 so it  must be rare, easier getting hold of pars for a borough superior.

footrests

Post  jontyknott on Tue May 30, 2017 12:47 pm

I found that footrests (on ebay) for an Indian royal enfield had the same bends and rise as my Cruiser 80's. So a pair of them + hexagon rod were made into new rests. Cheap as well, and came with rubbers.

footrests

Post  piston 197 on Thu Jun 01, 2017 7:11 pm

I have a pair from a Falcon, these are about an inch shorter in the rise ie, distance from bar fitting to horizontal where you put your feet, if you get desperate I will sell you these, you can either cut them and add a piece in, or use as they are, but l/hand one will foul the brake pedal if not lengthened

Gyrocopter, Don't be disheartened by the mickey taking on here. We really are a nice bunch and as a new member of the forum I wouldn't want you to feel otherwise. You are probably having the same problems we are all starting to get now. Whilst the bike itself isn't rare at-all the availability of spares is becoming difficult. Fewer and fewer bikes are being broken as they are more valuable complete (generally). I have a 1930s FB Cruiser and have come to the conclusion that it may be impossible to find the parts I need (after 15 years of vaguely trying). I have just started selling all of the surplus FB stuff (and others) that I have had for years. If every member in the club did the same there would be plenty of spares suddenly available. I sold a Plover 95 seat last week that I've had for 18 years. I've never owned a Plover and nor am i likely to so to keep it was selfish. Now somebody else has it and can make use of it.

Steve.

Well said Steve,

You have encouraged me to get down to putting some of my surplus FB stuff on EBay. I don't need it but someone else will.

Thanks

FB spares

Post  FB vincent on Sat Jun 03, 2017 7:15 am

Vale Onslow at Birmingham, the last surviving James dealer in the country, have rescued me on several occasions from a hopeless parts situation. Worth a try, but be patient, call after 11 am and ask for Len. Sandy Ross

I think you will find that Len has had a stroke and does not work anymore, but he remaining staff are more than capable of sorting out parts queries

Yes you are right Gyrocopter, we should all offer FB stuff on here before going to EBay. I will gather my bits together and put them on here soon, with photos.

Post  Gyrocopter on Wed Jun 14, 2017 9:39 pm

I Told you it is rare 721 views 20 replies but still no foot rest for the Plover 78.
If someone has a Plover 78 could you please take a photo with some dimensions or a drawing,  looks like I will have to fabricate a pair.
