Wanted Frame for 1959 Falcon

Post  Mr Mouse on Mon May 15, 2017 9:38 am

Hi Guys,

I'm after a front frame section for a 1959 Francis Barnett Falcon, mine is badly bent & has clearly had a bad front end shunt at some point in its past. I bought it as a rolling chassis for which I already had a villiers 8E engine, I didn't spot this at the time otherwise I would have walked away from it. If anyone can help out I would be most grateful !

Regards,

Gerry.

Frame

Gerry

I may be wrong and often am but if 1959 I would have expected a later engine than the 8E
You should list your frame number on here. And maybe engine number as well.

You are not wrong !

The 1958 and 1959 frame prefix beginning ZN and AN are to take a 10E ( different engine mounts to the 8E engine,) the frames to take an 8E are
1952- 1957 frame Nos SM,TM,UM,UUM,VM,WM and YM, frame Nos VM WM and YM appear very similar to the 1958/59 frame, with the exception of having engine mounts to take the 8E

Are you sure your frame is bent or are you trying to fit an 8E into a 1959 frame if so the engine mounts will all be slightly out and this might be confused for a bent frame ?

Wanted Frame for 1959 Falcon etc

Yes its definitely bent, I know it should have a 10E engine from new but I have a spare 8E engine & a mate who knows Villiers engines inside out said the 8E will fit. So that's why I bought it, perhaps I should be looking for a 1955 falcon frame instead then ?

it will fit

Tell your mate it will not, but with remaking the rear mount and removing the front mount and making a new one , it can be MADE TO FIT

Thanks for your input & I take it all on board, you clearly know more about this than I do. Looks like I will need to rethink my project !

Frame

Post  kerabo on Mon May 15, 2017 4:09 pm

The frame in my Avatar picture is a falcon 81 and as you can see it has a Villiers 8E in it but.
The 8E is narrower than the 9E . It may be ok with road tyres but with trials tyres it's a problem keeping the chain away from the tyre.
I removed and rewelded the top front mount and made a new triangle rear plate and added 3mm to my gearbox sprocket.
Using the original bottom mount it looks to sit a little high but I am happy.
Just watch the chain.
I do have a falcon 87 bare frame but don't know how the 8E would sit in that as it was AMC powered.

As i said !

Correct Ken, as I said , it can be made to fit as you have done, by removing and repositioning front mount and making new rear mounts.
The Falcon 87 frame is completely different and much more engineering will have to be done to fit the 8E as it is even further out in both mounting points and chain line
