Exhaust pipe question

Post  Tony Rickwood on Sun Mar 26, 2017 6:06 pm

I was reading a post from a while back regarding exhaust pipe sizes. As I understood it, the 6E engines had a smaller diameter pipe than the 8E. This is puzzling me as my 8E engined (according to the engine number) falcon 67 has a 1 1/4" dia pipe with a castellated nut rather than the larger finned nut. Is it possible I've got a different barrel?

Exhaust pipe

Post  kerabo on Mon Mar 27, 2017 6:25 am

Tony
I am in the same position.
I bought an 8E engine that had its original exhaust nut still fitted and set about making a trials exhaust. I then purchased a new nut only to find it takes a bigger pipe..
It's a bit late now to change my plans but looking into the exhaust port it's the size of my smaller pipe so I am not too worried.
Regards Ken

Thanks Ken. I'm not particularly bothered, just wanted to make sure I get the right pipe.

The earlier 8Es had a smaller diameter pipe. My original Model 67 was 1 1/4" with castellated nut too. JH will know the full spec SP.

Exhaust sizes

Post  piston 197 on Mon Mar 27, 2017 11:55 am

The thread on the barrel stub is the same size on all 6E,7E,8E barrels, the finned nut has a bigger hole in it for a larger diameter pipe, the castellated nut has a smaller hole for the smaller diameter pipe
The castellated nut is for the 1 1/4" pipe the finned nut is for the 1 1/2" pipe, I believe the Falcon 67 had the 8E with the smaller pipe and subsequent Falcon 70 & 74 had the bigger pipe.

My ISDT FB which was based loosely on the model 67 and was a 3 off factory special for the 1954 ISDT uses a threaded ring on the outside of the exhaust port to enable it to use the exhaust nut from the 1H and 1 3/4" exhaust pipe !!
