8E 3 speed gearbox problem

Post  marcusrm on Mon Mar 13, 2017 1:00 pm

I have just tested the bike after a winter tidy up which included a clutch rebuild, I posted an article with pictures on this previously, and I am sure that the clutch is working perfectly.
The problem is getting it into first gear when stationary, it is OK when moving.
I guess it is probably worn parts, but does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

Marcus

You don't say what happens?

Is it Grating?

Does it go in when the engine is not running?

Engaging first gear

I would guess that your plates are either dragging, or stuck while the bike is standing,
what are you using for lubrication on the chaincase ? Most people use automatic transmission fluid ( ATF or TQF) these days as the oil thick monograde oil tends to glue the plates together when standing.
Might be worth pulling in the clutch lever and kicking over a few times with the lever in to free the plates before starting ? If it does not free off in this way then plates are definitely sticking

8E 3 speed gearbox problem

Post  marcusrm on Mon Mar 13, 2017 2:57 pm

It seems to go in easier when the engine is not running. When the engine is running it just doesn't let me select first gear, there is no grating.
I took the bike for a second test and discovered that, if while trying to select first, I partially let the clutch out it usually clicked into gear.

I am using the old SAE140 oil in the chaincase.

Get rid of that old treacly stuff and fit in some ATF, when cold it acts like glue on the clutch plates, you may have to wash it off the plates with some petrol/paraffin.thinners
