Mark,

Frame number is stamped on the headstock. Please see below photo of my Kestrel 66 frame.

Not where mine was

Post  piston 197 on Thu Mar 02, 2017 8:39 pm

I had a Kestrel 66 and the frame No was under the saddle on the lug that joins the 3 tubes , left hand side , same place as where it would be stamped on James equivalent bikes, so maybe they were moved to the headstock later ?? , but I would look in both places ?

Frame Number ,

Post  piston 197 on Thu Mar 02, 2017 8:56 pm

Strangely enough that is a frame No, but it is a James frame No ??? the James frames for the 1954 year model started 005001 in November 1953 ???, although this would usually be pre-fixed J5, so your No should read J5/005466, Maybe as the James and FB shared the same frame, yours was originally destined to be a James, but the frame was used for FB Kestrel 66 and was then re-stamped to that purpose as both numbers look to be factory stampings ?
Guess we will never know ? I have had a couple of FB trials AMC bikes where there is James Maroon paint under the Green FB paint, so I guess they swapped and repurposed things ?
Possibly your frame early on in it's life was subject to a warranty claim and a James ( same) frame was supplied ??
all of this is conjecture, but your bike has 2 frame No.s , one FB and one James ?

Thanks John, you live and learn!

My 66 was first registered in December 1953 so I assume its an early one, something that can also be deduced from the relatively low FB frame number? There was certainly no evidence of any maroon paint when I stripped it by hand, just the FB blue.

Kestrel Frame Number

Mark,

Sorry if John and I have hijacked your original question. Hope our exchanges have helped you anyway?

Are you restoring your bike? If so, how is it going? There arent many of us Kestrel 66 owners about so Id be interested to hear about yours please.

Cheers,

Long gone

Post  piston 197 on Thu Mar 02, 2017 9:28 pm

Peter mine VRB 909 has long gone and I know the next owner took the registration off, it was my first restoration of a classic bike in 1986.
Your frame No is indeed early the Kestrel 66 frame Nos began U1001 in late 1953 for the 1954 year model, so this would make yours the 15th one made,

Kestrel Frame Number

Post  seipgam on Tue Mar 07, 2017 2:45 am

My Kestral 66 has both numbers (U1695 on headstock and 007082 under the seat).
I had noticed maroon paint inside the fork legs when changing the lower bushes and wondered about any possible James crossover.

Cheers, Geoff.
