Started :) which sparkplug?

Post  Fun on Mon Feb 20, 2017 8:24 am

Hi all

Well thanks to the advice on here have the model 9, 172 cc started, the sparkplug will need replacing along with the headgasket.

The surfaces appear to be flat so could cut my own just wondered if you can buy one for a 172? Before I do, can find them for the 196.

Which sparkplug should be installed, this one just has champion the rest of the writing has worn off!

Thanks again

Which Sparkplug

Post  MoscowFlyer on Mon Feb 20, 2017 4:50 pm

Hi, in an old Villiers book it lists three 172cc engines, the Sports, the Super Sports and the S.S.T.T. The plug for the Super Sports is the Lodge HLS, and the plug for the Sports is the Lodge CB3. There is a KLG plug on eBay which claims to be an equivalent to the Lodge CB3 but I don't know, see below. Mike

Hi

Thanks for that the barrel says TT, so I assume that's a SSTT, the old plug is short reach

Which Sparkplug

Post  MoscowFlyer on Mon Feb 20, 2017 6:27 pm

Hi, just been reading through other books, the Champion plug is the Champion 16, others are KLG ML.60, and Lodge HL1P. Apparently the Super Sports T.T. has no cylinder head gasket or jointing compound, I've come across this one before. Mike

I'm guessing it's been skimmed a few times in its lifetime, it would be very close for the piston and head without, I'll make some measurements and check but pretty sure from my weekend check it would hit and probably why a gasket has been made up it's only thin copper sheet.

Few things to have a think about!
