Any chance of posting how the spring mechanism works? I was just going to bung on a Bantam stand spring and hope! Just starting to put all the freshly coated bits together this morning, the kitchen is all warmed up and ready for action Very Happy

OK. That failed. Bantam spring is way too long, so that's back into stock. Anyone any ideas for a substitute spring that'll fit the Falcon 87?

spring

Post  piston 197 on Sun Dec 18, 2016 1:58 pm

It is not a tension spring, it is a compression spring mechanism
Imagine a 6" nail, grind off the head and bend approx. 3/4" from one end at 90 degrees, just in from this short end drill a hole for a split pin, Now on the long length braze a washer about 1" from the bend,
The spring is a straight strong coil spring which slides over the long end and buts against the washer, spring is about 1/2" of and about 4" long
On the stand is a tab with a hole in it, the short end of the rod goes through this and is retained by a split pin and washer, the long end goes through a swivelling trunion on the frame, the spring is positioned between the trunion and the washer,
That is about as accurately as I can describe, but given a look at someone else's bike will be obvious

PM sent with email address. Think I'm getting there now, just puzzled with this spring idea as the stand must just bounce up and down like a mad thing when you're riding, or need Charles Atlas' leg to shift it over centre!? I'll sort it. Though build is a bit slow with Xmas and the powder coaters losing my back engine mounting plates in a stock shift round.

Thanks Ken. Contacted Alberta Springs, and Graham there has the centre stand spring (and rod) specs on record, by FB part number. None in stock currently but will be doing a batch in the next few weeks if any one else wants the correct size, strength spring.

Stand spring

Post  kerabo on Wed Jan 04, 2017 8:26 pm

That's good news.
I have sent him a few FB old springs and part numbers to use and keep as a pattern.
He seems a good guy. So if anyone has what may be the last of any Spring just give him a pattern and a description of what it is and where it goes and post to him

Regards Ken
