Francis barnett no spark

Hi I have a 1958 Francis barnett light cruiser 79 amc,,I've rebuilt the bike ect put the kick start on and have to spark from plug when I ground it to engine.i have has a multi meter on the wire heading to the coil and whem I kick start the engine there's a reading of 0.56 v comes up but no spark from plug thanks anywhere would be appreciated.

Hi Martin

Check that you have a circuit between the output wire from the engine through the Ht coil primary and back to earth through the contact breaker in points closed condition. The circuit should be broken when the points are opened. I would expect the loop resistance to be less than 20 ohms. If you want to check if you have an output from the engine ac generator measure the ac current from the generator to earth, this should be above 100 - 200 mA at "kick start" speed. (An analogue ammeter is likely to be better in this situation than a digital multimeter)

Check you have battery voltage at the live side of the coil. If you then stroke a wire from the CB side of the coil to earth you should see a spark at the plug.
