1927 Model 9 Super Sports - Correct front tyre size identification

Post  HardyMG on Thu Sep 15, 2016 6:16 am

Is anyone able to advise on a brand of reproduction tyre which will fit the front wheel. The spec is meant to be a 3.00x19. However, the forks are narrow at the point where the mudguard passes around the back and comes into contact with the old tyre on the bike which needs replaying.

At 48mm out from the rim circumference, the width cannot be more that 70mm although can be 77mm closer to the rim. Looking at the selection available from Vintage Tyres, it appears all their 3.00 x 19.00 are possibly too wide and I would prefer not to go down to a 2.75 tyre as the larger tyres are a distinguishing factor from the Model 5.

Any assistance much appreciated as we are about to hopefully have this bike back on the road in its original condition, first time since 1952.

Regards

tyres size

Original spec. quotes Dunlop "balloon "tyres @ 25 x 3 , this was an old style of measurement to the outside dia. of tyre, this is approx. equivalent to the size you quote of 3.00 x 19
3 inch is approximately 75 mm and should fit between the fork set up without fouling ?? unless the "new" sizes are actually wider than 3" ??, if not I guess you will have to use 2.75 x 19 ?

Correct front tyre

Post  colk2004 on Thu Sep 15, 2016 7:28 pm

I've just had a similar problem with my Bantam. New 3.00 tyres aren't the same width as old 3.00 tyres so the clearance on the mudguard which was slim to start with is lost. So I've ended up with a 2.75 front tyre. I think the problem is more modern tyres wrap the tread further round the sidewall. Someone must do a ribbed front though that works.

Thanks chaps. Yes, I noticed one tyre specified the old size spec on the wall being 3.00 x 19 and the rear had 3.00 x 25. It looks like I will have to go down the 2.75 route but apart from losing 10mm in the overall diameter, it looks like new 2.75 size may be approaching the old 3.00 size so after careful consideration I will run with that. May thanks. Richard (HardyMG)
