Help please. Can you sell a Francis Barnett Plover without logbook

Post  Gilly on Thu Sep 08, 2016 10:33 pm

Hi

A quick question.

My Dad wishes to sell his 1949 (we think) Francis Barnett Plover but is having problems getting the logbook. He took it off the road in 1957 but has since misplaced the logbook. The DVLA has returned the paperwork I sent saying it is no longer registered with them.

The bike has been rebuilt by my Dad and is running and complete. At 80 years old he is no longer able to ride it but his one wish is to see it restored to it's former glory. He would hate to see it stripped down for parts so has asked me to join this forum to try and find a buyer

Would he have problems trying to sell it without the logbook. If so, is anyone able to advise on how he can re-register it please ? He has given me the frame and engine number but I'm at a loss at what to do next.

Thank you

Gilly

I make it a 1961 model by registration prefix.

Thank you but that is very confusing because it was last taxed in 57

Confusing

Post  piston 197 on Fri Sep 09, 2016 10:56 am

The bike is a 1961 FB Plover 86, the engine No should read 15T4710 ( not 1574710)
Registration Number YNV 446 was issued by Nothamptonshire CC between April 1961 and June 1961
There must be some confusion memory wise as the bike was not built until 4 years after 1957 ?, maybe taken off the road in 1967 ?

The bike can be sold with or without registration, but without a logbook it will be worth substantially less as the registration process will require
Dating letter from FBOC 10 ( non member cost)
DVLA fee of 55
MOT ( as post 1960) 29.65p
Insurance ???

if the old logbook exists it can be put onto a modern V5C for just MOT Club dating letter cost using the DVLA V765 scheme

Thank you so much for all this information. I'll relay it to my Dad and see what he wants me to do. The reason I mention it being taxed in 57 is because it still has the old tax disc on. Very odd but you know your stuff and I'm sure he probably misread the engine number as a 7 instead of a T . I'll have a look when I'm next over. Thanks again for your help

Tax disc

Post  piston 197 on Fri Sep 09, 2016 5:58 pm

Might be worth looking at the tax disc as well to see if it bears the same registration as the bike, but it is impossible to tax a bike 4 years before it was built,
The frame Pre-fix "C" was used twice 1933 and 1961, and just from the info you give 1933 it ain't

Problem solved. My Dad had taken the frame number that was written on the owners manual. Having then checked on the bike itself it was a T and not a 7. So thank you for pointing this out. We now know it's a 61. Also..it was last taxed in 75...not 57 ! He blames me for not listening propey when he told me.
He has decided to sell it on as it is. Can I list it for saless on here or do I have to become a member first ?
