AMC 17T piston rings

Post  Cruiser79 on Fri Aug 26, 2016 7:46 pm

Hey guys, back after a long time. My light cruiser 79 has been on the back burner for the last 10 years due to working abroad and life taking over etc, the usual story! It was shelved mid rebuild with the 17T engine in bits (although large, partially rebuilt bits) I've managed to find some of the bits I need over the years but still missing some. My first task is that I would like to get it running. Am going to split the box and crank cases again as they've sat for ten years.

Would anyone have or know where I can get my hands on a set of +040" rings for the 17T? My own ones are shot. Am going to need a set of fork seals? Are these available from anywhere or will the seals from another AMC based bike suit?

AMC 17T piston rings

Post  colk2004 on Sun Aug 28, 2016 4:27 pm

I'm sure someone will know about the piston rings, but I've picked up the odd set off EBay, and they have come up fairly regularly - it's the pistons that are tricky. Fork seals , if they are the same as the Falcon 87, I picked up brand new from Villiers Services. Hopefully someone will confirm the details I've just given for you - or contact Villiers and get them to tell you whether they will fit your model.

seals

Post  piston 197 on Sun Aug 28, 2016 4:36 pm

Yes all James FB, 200cc,225cc and 250cc Bikes share the same seals as does the Matchless G2, AJS 14 ( 250cc non CSR models) and Norton Jubilee 250cc

Piston rings for the 17T and 20T engine are the same ( piston is different before engine 17T3032 and the same after for all 17T and 20T engines)

thanks for that info guys. My piston is in good shape as is the bore, oddly the rings resemble a skate board park so need changing.
If anyone has the rings which I need I'd be happy to pay cash or trade spares, I have a reasonable amount of 17T bits and most of a 25T unit to trade

AMC17t piston rings

http://villiersservices.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=21_88_73&products_id=176 is your fork seals then.

I'll have a look in the shed tomorrow and see what rings I've got. For some reason (hoarding?!) I've got a load of barrels, pistons and rings and might have +0.40s (or they could be +0.20s can't remember). I was buying bits on the off chance that eventually I would get a matching set of bits...then some nice man sold me a barrel, with new piston and rings all matched. I'll get back to you tomorrow.

AMC17t piston rings

Post  colk2004 on Mon Aug 29, 2016 12:10 pm

Just checked the shed. Unfortunately the rings I have are +0.20" (also have pistons with odd +0.30" and +0.60" and standard rings). Good luck with the search but keep an eye on EBay as rings do come up.

Good spot Tony, thanks for the heads up. Oddly when i put the listing number into ebay nothing comes up and if i search "francis barnett piston" or "17t amc" nothing either, as if its not on ebay. I eventually found it through a google image search and link from a third party website of all things! Wonder what else I've missed on ebay over the years! Alas its too small for what i need, definite gold dust though!

Colin, many thanks for having a rummage through your spares. Much appreciated

For the AMC guys I picked this chart up on ebay many years ago and am looking in to having it reproduced in A1 size to pass on to others and also just to have one I can get dirty in the work shop!. Theres an A4 binder next to it for scale. Hands down beats the small diagram in the manual or Goddard book! Handy cross reference on the bottom as well to show which parts are shared between the cruiser 79/80,scrambles 82 and trials 83. Its my bible trying to put this thing back together!

Peter

I'd be interested as well. Having just spent weeks squinting at the reprint of a handbook and Goddards with a magnifying glass trying to work out shims, washers, and bits.

As for rummaging through the spares, no problem. I think after the Falcon 87 is done I'll be off loading a few bits and bobs to club members as I seem to be getting a hoard of wrong bits, and duplicates of duplicates!

exploded part diagram poster

Post  Cruiser79 on Tue Aug 30, 2016 11:20 am

Assuming i can find somewhere to copy it i'll make it available to anyone who would like it. Have spoken to a printing company who reckon they can do black and white copies in a large A1 poster for ~5 per poster but they need to see the original first to see if its strong enough to run through the rollers of their scanner and live to tell the tale. (paper is mega flimsy around all the folds)
Colin, I sent you over a PM, or at least tried to. Its not showing in my outbox so no idea if it worked or not confused

I have a similar poster but also includes the Falcon 87 20T. I can only find 3 photocopies at the moment, I know I have the original somewhere. If you are stuck and want one let me know, I can't remember how much they cost me to have them copied but I guess 5 would be OK.
I don't know how to put pictures on here but i can email photos if anyone wants to get an idea of what they are like.
I also have 1 copy of the 15 T engine, again can't find the original yet.
I had one copy laminated for myself and is posted on the wall above my workbench, very useful.
