Rough running Cruiser

Post  cruiser5588 on Mon Aug 15, 2016 12:51 pm

My Cruiser 89, 2T engine is running very rough. It smokes, misfires, spits back through the carb, and will not pull. It revs and pulls fine for the initial 50 yards, then all the above symptoms start.

I have fitted new plugs, points, condensers, checked timing (heads off, gaskets removed), and stripped and cleaned the carb. I have blown through all jets with the airline.

The exhaust smokes, and the plugs are black and wet, with oily muck blowing from the exhausts.

The mixture is currently 25:1, and the needle is set at the second to top notch.

Any ideas, or tea and sympathy would be greatly appreciated.

Have you changed the crank case seals ? could it be drawing oil in from the clutch case ?
Are you using a modern two stroke oil ? as these should run virtually smoke free ?
Have you tried switching the fuel off once started to see if flooding of the carb is the problem ?

Yes it should have a Villiers carb , a S22, and the needle is adjusted in notches like the Amal carb Ken

Rough running Cruiser

Post  cruiser5588 on Mon Aug 15, 2016 6:38 pm

Hi JH

I haven't changed the crankcase seals, and I am using oil purchased from Villiers Services. Not tried running it with the fuel turned off, but there is no flooding with the fuel on but engine off. I did check the float to make sure it had no puncture. The strange thing is, that apart from being a bit smokey, the bike ran fine, and these symptoms started suddenly. The only thing I had done was to add fuel with a bit less oil, and lower the needle on notch to try to lessen the smoking.

Suggest drain the fuel go back to original mix and put the needle back where it was ?
if it still has the problem , then what you changed was not the problem and the seals have probably gone, just hope it is not the centre one , if so crank has to be split

Rough running Cruiser

Post  cruiser5588 on Wed Aug 17, 2016 6:40 pm

I have spoken to Villiers Services, and my fears have been confirmed. It's the dreaded crankcase seals. however, on the bright side, their re-con service sounds good, with the prices quite reasonable, and it comes with a warranty. So engine out then.

Thanks for all the advice.
