Felt oil seal

Post  chrisc on Wed Jun 22, 2016 12:04 pm

I have a bad oil leak coming from the felt oil seal on the gearbox shaft behind the clutch (believe it's common) of my Falcon 87. I have tried soaking it in thin oil to no avail, has anyone found a better way of stopping this problem ?
P.S. Three attempts and my drip tray is nearly full !! Very Happy
Cheers ChrisC

Chris the Villiers engine used a felt seal on early 1H engines behind the clutch and had a similar problem, on later engines and 2T twins, they machined out the inner case and fitted a rubber seal similar to the crankcase seals, might be the way to go ?

Thanks John for the reply, I think you may well be right. it might be interesting to see if anyone else has good ideas on the subject too, but I feel your idea is the way forward. Cheers chris
