Falcon 87 20T Oil Seals

Post  colk2004 on Thu May 12, 2016 9:18 pm

Does anyone have a reference and supplier for the crank seals (and any others I might need)? The crank seal I've pulled out has nothing written on it! I think I'm after 1 1/8" ID, 1 3/4 OD, 3/8" width with double lip but I can only find singles. Ordered 2 x RLS6 bearings and I think I've been lucky with the CRL6 from the spare James Captain motor. In fact been a bit lucky all round having the spare motor. The big end is shot on mine, the crank bearings are shot, the clutch basket had cracks in the outer basket which when tested two sections fell off, the clutch nut had been peened over by a gorilla with a lump hammer, the crank nut had been tightened with a chisel, and the list goes on. Seems a shame to cannibalize the James motor but it had already been plundered for gearbox springs, and the barrel and piston before I got it. Does anyone in the club keep a list of engine numbers so they know whats been consigned to the big scrapyard in the sky, or at least where they are?

This is a post from 2010 on the same subject where Kerabo said:

The size suggests that your assumption was correct.

Steve.

Thanks Steve, I did a search last night and bailed before I got that far back in time. 3 ordered (1 just in-case or spares), so just got the CLR6 bearing to sort, but I think I've got one good one.

Thanks

be carefull with these seals. I found the seal runners a tight fit when putting back in and wished I had put them in from the othervsidecand fitted the seals with them in. I ended up with grease and a taper made from a thin bottle. Take note the Weald can partly cover oil feeds to the crank bearings. I made a grove in the seal to keep this open.

Crankshaft seals Falcon 87

Post  colk2004 on Fri May 13, 2016 7:38 pm

Thanks Ken. This engine is going to need a lot of loving care, including the oil feeds. Packed up this evening having found no shim between the engine and gearbox, one of the locating pins from the gearbox missing and the casting where it fits on the gearbox bust, the conrod looks like a dogs been chewing it(?), a couple of screwdriver marks where the crankcases have been pried apart and the halves had a gasket made out of brown paper and grease between them. Oh and the obligatory hole where the chain has worn through the casing. This is truly a little engine of horrors. I'll be one happy man when this fires up for the first time.

Cheers Colin
