Falcon 87 1964/65 Green/Cream Colours

Post  colk2004 on Tue May 10, 2016 1:31 pm

Has anyone got any decent images of the correct colours for this model? I have a colour brochure from the right year and it appears that its green front mudguard, cream rear mudguard, sidepanels bottom green/top cream. Tank should be top green, bottom cream running horizontal then curving round the knee pads. Everything else green....so far so good. There appears to be only a single pin stripe in yellow (which will be gold) at the join on the two colour bits and the falcon on the side panel white on a red background. And no other stickers or pinstripes can be seen. Is this about right?
I have seen so many variations on actual bikes that I'm hoping the sales brochure would be right.

Falcon 87 paint finishes

Post  FB vincent on Tue May 10, 2016 2:24 pm

The last decent sales catalogue was dated 1964, the 1965 version was cheap and nasty and nothing was published in the final year of 1966. The catalogue Falcon image for 1963 is the same as 1964. Your description sounds spot on, there were no other transfers or lining out.

As you say, sadly many modern repaint finishes are miles off the original, so well done for attempting to get back to the original.

Remember that some bikes were sold a considerable time after the date of manufacture, so the year of original registration can result in some confusion as to the correct finish.

Sandy Ross (who is old enough to have wandered along the rows of factory fresh Francis Barnett's in the dealer showrooms).

Falcon 87 paint finishes

Hi Colin, I don't want to confuse you, but have a look at the Falcon 87 below, it was on show at Earls Court. I was at the 1965 show but don't remember this bike, but maybe I was more interested in the girl models at that time! Mike

Mike, I think the girls must have got you very confused. This has to be an earlier show than 1965, since the revised front fork/handlebar arrangement was introduced for the 1963 season - the photo clearly shows the earlier style, complete with front mudguard numberplate, and the finish would be appropriate for the time. Falcon 87 '65

This is what I'm working from. Though not exactly as I've had to use a bit of licence due to parts availability. So the front mudguard will be the older style one as I found a 'new old stock' one (till I find the correct one in decent nick). But bars will be the adjustable ones (though from a Tiger Cub as the originals are battered). My forks are different as well as they have a bolt holding the damper rods from below and a larger spindle clamp. Problem I have is I can't make out the detail on this image to see whether the pin stripes are single or more and they look bright yellow. Also can't see whether there was anything on the top of the tank. I know when I finish it won't pass the rivet counters, but I'd like to get close where I can - but I've seen so many different combos its hard to work out what is correct. The bike I've got had a cream headlight, cream tool/battery box, black chain guards and about 3 different shades of green which all appear a bit on the light/lurid side.

Thanks for the help.

I have a toolbox lid in original paint that looks just like the one in your image. There are two gold pin stripes. The lower one is approx 5.5mm wide and covers the join of the two colours. The top one is approx 2mm wide with a gap of 3mm between the stripes. The top edge of the transfer lines up exactly with the top edge of the top stripe, hiding it. The colour joint is exactly halfway between the two mounting holes. The inside of the lid is green, ie  the white is painted after the whole lid is painted green. If you zoom your image you can see that the petrol tank appears to be the same with two pinstripes, one thick, one thin.

Steve.

Falcon 87 '65 Colours

Thanks guys. Should actually end up with something that looks the part. I think the Falcon 87 appears to be everywhere except North Yorkshire. Still not seen outside of Dick Cravens.
