AMC silencer sealing

Post  kerabo on Thu Mar 31, 2016 7:38 am

I may be wrong on this but has anyone ever seen an O ring in the front tip of the AMC silencer where it slides over the front pipe. There is a groove for one about 3/8" from the front end .
I have used sealant but it's messy and they still vibrate.

Hi Ken,

I make my own 'O' rings from Viton 75 very cheaply. This stuff will stand Ethanol, heat, oil and anything else. I made mine using Sealforce materials on Ebay.

Dead easy, you just estimate the length of the Cord, after measuring the groove. After cutting absolutely square, stick the ends together using Super-glue. The biggest hazard is sticking your fingers together. If you make it the wrong size, make another one - you've only wasted pennies. I made an 'O' ring seal for my Model 87 fuel cap, after a debacle trying to adapt a Triumph seal. It's still there doing it's job a year later, and Ethanol fuel doesn't make it swell.

Thanks Ted

So there should be an O ring?

Do you remember what size you used.

Sorry I don't, but if you have the silencer off, you can measure the depth of the groove with a small ball of well 'gobbed' Plasticine, not forgetting to allow for compression when you feed the Silencer on the pipe. The ring should sit proud of the groove by approx 1mm but be slightly bigger in dia. than the groove, to prevent it coming out on insertion. It's a little bit trial and error, but they are so cheap to make that if you get it slightly wrong another one is quick and cheap to make.
