trials kickstart

Post  andy-s on Wed Dec 30, 2015 1:10 pm

Hello,
I am looking for a folding / trials type kickstart for an 8e with a 3 speed box , 5/8 I think . overall condition not that important as long as the splines are good.
Have a good new year.

Try Cotton Villiers trials you can find them on the web, modern folding k/start that folds from the bottom and tucks in brilliantly, make sure you ask for 5/8" spline not 3/4", not cheap, but brilliant design and lightweight high tensile alloy top

No luck at cotton Villiers , the ones they supply don't fit the 3 speed box because of shape of the casting . So still in the market if anyone has one .

Kick start

Post  piston 197 on Thu Dec 31, 2015 6:07 pm

What I do is buy a Japanese trial/trail bike k/start and cut it through the centre of the splines,
using an original Villiers 3 speed k/start I cut this about 1 1/2" up from the spline and round it off so that it will sit in the half spline of the Japanese one , then weld the two together.
This way you have the usual spline and spring return mechanism, but k/start will now fold just above the clutch nut adjuster .

Thanks john , that's a good way around it . The problem is the splines on my original are shot , it wasn't a folding one just one somebody had doctored . If I cant find a trials one I will give you a shout at Shepton Mallet to see if you can supply one with good splines for me to adapt . Don't think the first trial is until march . Will keep on looking.
