Help Identifying a bike...

Post  becharoo on Tue Dec 29, 2015 7:20 pm

Hi,

I don't know if anyone can help me but my dad has bought a bike and we are trying to identify what model it is, find some more information about it and locate some spares.

the information we have is:
Francis Barnett
The little steel plate says 313B T611 Engine type 9F

the last time it was taxed was in March 69 in Gosport

On the bike frame there 6534C and then letters either MB with the letters connected or IVB unsure! any help appreciated.

thanks

becka

Numbers

I think it may be best if you post some pictures of what you have. Those numbers don't mean much to me. maybe someone else can help but a picture would be best.

frame numbers

Post  piston 197 on Wed Dec 30, 2015 1:43 pm

The number you give for the frame is the raised casting numbers for the headstock casting, this will be identical on all models using this headstock, look again there should be a stamped in No on the l/hand side of the headstock , THIS is the frame No
FB never used a 9E engine, but it will fit into the model 81 frame , as the number is on the clutch case this may have been changed and the original No lost ?

identification

Post  piston 197 on Thu Dec 31, 2015 2:19 pm

A= 1959 model ( sept 58 to August 59)
N = Falcon 81
86606 = unique serial No
W = green/white paint work
This bike would have been fitted with a Villiers 10E 197cc engine with Engine code 626B
the 313 B 9E coding was originally used by Cotton, Greeves , Ambassador, DOT ,Panther and Excelsior , but not FB, it is possible it still has the original engine and just the clutch inner cover has been changed, this has the serial No plate on it and gets broken by chain failures quite regularly ?

That is great! The plate is quite shiny so possibly new. Thanks so much@ where would you think would be a good place to go for spares? Looking for tank badges if anyone might suggest where to get them?

Happy new year to you Smile

plate is shiny ?

Post  piston 197 on Thu Dec 31, 2015 3:46 pm

The frame No should be stamped into the actual frame , and not on a shiny plate ?
I will send you a p.m. with a contact for tank badges
I have the badge rubbers if you need them , also seat rubbers and horn surround rubber

Falcon

Your frame number is almost identical to my 59 Falcon. Piston supplied me with a contact for tank badges, I bought a set and they are nice.

Happy New Year

Engine number.

Mine too is on a shiny plate, they must be made of a superior metal and seem to last well.

engine No

Post  piston 197 on Thu Dec 31, 2015 5:11 pm

Yes engine No on 9E and later engines ( 1H,2T, 4T 31-7A etc.) is on a shiny ( aluminium) plate riveted to the inner chain case, my mistake , thought you were referring to the frame No , only some James and the FB plover and Sports cruiser have the frame No on a plate all other FB's have it stamped into the headstock
