I know this is a long shot, but does anyone have a handlebar front brake lever assembly available for a FB Powerbike? Please PM me if you can help. Sandy

POwerbike front brake lever

Ken,

I have been in contact with Danny at Mopedland but I don't think that any of their offerings have the correct cable pull for early British Hub Co brakes.

Powerbike brake lever

Ken,

The critical dimension is the total pull on the cable, which needs to be at least one inch. Most bicycle levers are less than this.

Autocycles are a strange mix of bicycle and motorcycle parts, but some items were unique to them. Francis Barnett seemed to specialise in even more non standard features, including the back pedal brake, rubber front suspension, pedal chain adjustment via eccentric movement of the pedal shaft, and a welded frame on the Powerbike 56.

Brake lever

Post  keith.hodgenia on Mon Jan 29, 2018 1:24 pm

Hi Sandy, if you want total originality then only the right one will do. However if you find a steel bladed lever you should be able to bend it with some heat till it is at the same jaunty angle as your photo, as Ken hints at the pivot length helps with the total pull. The closer the brake shoes are to the drum the less will be the pull needed, so that needs checking. Sorry if I am missing the point or trying to teach my granny. Keith.

Powerbike 56 handlebar brake lever

Post  FB vincent on Mon Jan 29, 2018 3:39 pm

Keith, As you probably realise, my photo shows an original (correct) Powerbike front brake lever. Being total gluttons for punishment, we are restoring a second similar Powerbike 56. We have temporarily fitted a period Raleigh moped/bicycle lever, and unless something better comes up we may indeed change the bend on the lever to give more pull. The FB brake linings have been renewed, but the brake mechanism on the autocycle is larger than the Sturmey Archer hub brake fitted to a Raleigh Moped, hence the need for more pull. Sandy

I haven't seen all of what your doing but can you alter the brake arm at the hub to give the leverage you need.

Brake lever

Thanks for your ideas as above. Still hoping that one day a proper FB autocycle handlebar lever will turn up, but in the meantime the lever of the non original fitting has been heated and bent to provide the necessary leverage. Sandy

Hi Sandy, the levers below are from a 1930s Cruiser. If the dimensions are correct youíre welcome to either of them. Thereís one of each hand but one is much nicer than the other. The Cruiser is a project Iím never going to get around to finishing.

FB Powerbike handlebar brake lever

Post  FB vincent on Tue Feb 06, 2018 5:30 pm

Steve,

Thanks for the offer, but ideally I now need the complete mechanism as per the photo in my original post - this appears to be unique to FB. The substitute fitting does the job and there are not many Powerbike rivet counters about to tell me that it is wrong................... Sandy

Tony,

Thanks for this, but I think we are ok (until such time as a genuine item turns up, as per my photo in the first post).
