falcon 81fuel problem?

Post  dennis payne on Sun May 24, 2015 12:39 pm

Just got the falcon started after fitting new coil, cleaning carb ,fitting new ht lead and sparkplug.
Starts ok, but a short run of 400yrd it dies as if short of fuel. Yet to check needle setting. What is position of choke lever for normal running,ie fully forward or fully back or a combination of both. Many thanks Rolling Eyes

choke position

Post  piston 197 on Sun May 24, 2015 2:34 pm

For cold starting choke slide is released to bottom position The Falcon 81 can have either a cable/lever operation or a plunger in carb top, so choke position is closed lever/slack cable, or plunger type with the plunger lowered. For normal running choke slide raised , handlebar lever opened ( tight cable) or if plunger type, then the plunger must be raised

falcon 81 fuel

Post  dennis payne on Sun May 24, 2015 3:05 pm

Thanks JH, Reset neadle to 195 and reset air screw to 1.5 turns.Runs much better and with choke lever fully off [tight]. I think it may be faulty fuel tap thats the problem,as the bike has not been used since 1970. Have managed to get new V5 and still retain old no issued with bike in April 1958.

slack cable

Post  piston 197 on Sun May 24, 2015 3:09 pm

Choke will be fully on with the cable in slack position, i.e. slide will be closed, for normal running choke slide should be raised ( tight cable/choke off)
