clutch cover gasket

Hi all.
can anybody recommend a way to seal the clutch cover on an 8e?.
I have used a new gasket with V.S recommended heat resistant silicone,no joy.
Another new gasket using hylomar blue,after a couple of days another seapage.
I am looking on ebay at the moment at gasket material,but not quite sure what to buy.
Any thoughts from you good people?.

clutch seal

I have used silicone sealant with no gasket, clean both surfaces then apply sealant to inner cover, smear a light coat of grease on outer cover and do up centre bolt very lightly, Trim off excess when dry, then fully tighten before filling with oil, Done this way the gasket should remain in place if the outer cover has to be removed ?

Grease really? I would never had thought!
I am at my wits end ,and will try this method.
It seems mad,such a big cover and 1 center bolt to pinch it up.
My next question is,how tight?has the bolt got a stop point ,or is the cover easily cracked?.

cover pressure

The centre not should come to a stop point when the two inner bosses meet up, after that you are just turning the stud into the crankcases. The idea of the grease is to make sure the silicone gasket material sticks only to one surface

I had success with a variation on this method:- applied a bead of clear instant gasket/silicone to the outer cover (after cleaning), let it set solid, then oil/grease inner surface & bolted it up. I recall using me finger while silicone was still sticky to shape the bead into an inverted "V". Worked good on two 8E clutch cases & is reusable with care.

John is of course spot on with his advice, and Silicon can seal a distortion of up to 20 or 30 thou, in practical terms, but that is the problem - distortion, or bottoming out, and you could with advantage file it flat, if you have the skill.
Next time that you take the cover off, check it with feelers on a flat surface.

Additionally to what John says, by using a thin smear of grease on one surface of your joint, it's possible to remove the cover by the road-side, should you need to, and if you are careful, replace it and still be reasonably leak free.

Personally, the only time I use gaskets, is when they are required because of their thickness or as shims - every other time it's Silicon.

Many thanks to you all for your advice.
I was hoping someone would suggest no gasket.
I re-sealed for the 4th time yesterday,using your meathod,and as of this morning all seems dry at last.

Something that I left out when using Silicon, is that it is essential that covers are screwed up wet. People who don't get on with Silicon almost invariably are not quick enough, or think that it has to partly dry; like older types of gasket compounds.
If you do inadvertently let it go off you will have to remove it (petrol destroys it), and start again.
It stays usable for 10 mins or so.

Gaskets

Not a lot of point in using gaskets and sealant unless the gasket is a spacer. As John Said just sealant. Halfords Locktite is very good.
