Merlin Front Wheel Removal.

Post  MrTweedy on Thu Apr 23, 2015 2:49 pm

Hello all.

I'm just about to remove the front wheel of my 49 Merlin so I can get the brake shoes relined. I had a quick look at it today and decided to leave it alone until I knew more about it. I'm fairly new to working on old motorcycles and I have a constant fear of things exploding in a shower of ball bearings and springs.
So, what's the method of removing the front wheel? Is it a threaded spindle that runs all the way through which removes from one side? Or do you remove both nuts and let the wheel drop out like a bicycle?
Any help would be great.

Best regards

Matt

Undo one pinch bolt and loosen the nut, tighten up pinch bolt on that side, loosen the pinch bolt on the other side and remove nut. Then repeat for other side, both pinch bolts and nuts will have to be removed before wheel will drop out.

I will just add this as it looks like putting it back on a certain way is important too.
