Merlin help

Post  Kyle17645 on Tue Feb 24, 2015 9:22 pm

Hello
I Recently bought a 1950 model 51 merlin rigid with springer front forks, at the moment I'm after parts for the bike,it's missing the chain guard and the nuts/fixings at the top of the forks around the top yolk,I can't seem to find any images or books on the parts except for "fb spares", does anyone have any pictures of the parts I need or a picture of the headstock/headlight area of a merlin, would also be great if anyone knew where parts are for sale.
Any help greatly appreciated
Thanks very much Kyle

Hello Kyle. Mine doesn't have girder forks so I don't think my bike will help you that much.

front forks

Post  piston 197 on Wed Feb 25, 2015 4:43 pm

The Merlin 51 has girder forks and a 125cc Villiers hand change 9D engine, if you bike has tele forks it either has the wrong forks or is a later model Merlin ( 52 or 53 ?)
Might be worth looking at the frame number and posting on here so we can tell what you have and what it is you want ?

Merlin ID

Post  piston 197 on Wed Feb 25, 2015 5:46 pm

Yes that's it then RL is a 1951 year model Merlin made between September 1950 and August 1951, the direct lighting model was the 52 and the battery model with rectified lighting was the 53, so you have a Merlin 53,( 1951 year model)
I have a top yoke if you need one ?

headstock

Post  piston 197 on Wed Feb 25, 2015 6:32 pm

There are 4 bearing cups , 2 in frame and one on bottom yoke at the bottom of the stem, and a loose one at the top, and ball bearings between them there is an adjuster nut, threaded down to hold these in place, then a triangular yoke that has 3 holes, 2 for the fork legs and one for the stem, there are 2 bolts and nuts that go through the holes in the top yoke and top of the fork legs, and the domed nut that goes on the spindle, with a washer underneath it
I definitely have the top yoke and may have the adjuster nut ?

Top yoke

Post  piston 197 on Wed Feb 25, 2015 7:59 pm

Yes that is the one, and chrome is correct for that year, there is one hole for the stem and 2 welded on tubes for the fork legs with bolt holes through the side to secure the fork tubes, it was not in the picture , so assumed you did not have it
