cruiser 89 12v electrics

Post  peterbrook on Mon Dec 22, 2014 7:40 pm

I am looking to convert my Cruiser 89 to 12v electrics. can anyone advise me on what I need to do. I presume the ignition coils will need to be changed but I am not certain what changes I need to make to the alternator.

12volt electrics

Post  piston 197 on Tue Dec 23, 2014 7:07 am

Firstly you do not have an Alternator on your bike , it is a flywheel Generator which produces voltage, there are several threads on this site where in the past this has been discussed, the best solution seems to have been to make up a new back plate to take a Lucas RM series Stator and to modify the corresponding rotor to fit the crank taper. This will give you full AC alternator electrics, but the ignition side will have to be battery fed with Dc ignition coils. as you will have lost your low tension coils. if you put alternator conversion into the search box in the r/hand top corner , I am sure you will find it ?

Alternator conversion

Post  tbird on Tue Dec 23, 2014 8:18 am

Hi Peter

I have done this conversion and it works, if you follow what JH has advised and go back in the archives, look at "alternator conversion" there is a bit you can bring up which is what I submitted to the Directory a while back.
Make sure you open the link it has wiring and picures to see.
If you require any more info please PM me.

12V alternator conversion on the 2T and 4T

Post  cruiser89 on Thu Jan 29, 2015 11:17 pm

Regarding the alternator conversion on the 2T and 4T engines, Peter Savage is not able to supply the parts he has been out of action since May 2014 following a stroke, i phoned him up a few days ago and spoke to his wife, he is still recovering from his stroke and is still not been able to make or supply any parts.

Is there anyone else who can make or supply the parts for the 12 volt conversion?

Cheers
Iain

Peter
I think I made drawings of the parts that need machining, I will look through my file and let you know.
