Albion Pre war gearbox identification

Post  fulmar88 on Wed Jul 30, 2014 11:30 am

I have a 1936 F45 Cruiser which has an albion gearbox with the prefix RM. I have a spare which is of a similar size with a prefix RC. I have another smaller gearbox prefix MC. Does anyone have any idea what each of these prefixes mean? I've searched online and can't find anything definitive (but lots of confusion). I'm not convinced that the prefix is the gearbox type, more just a unique identifier. They only seem to go to three numbers after the prefix so RC and RM prefixes could be identical designs and just sequential once they got to no. 999. Anyone?

gearbox numbers

Post  piston 197 on Wed Jul 30, 2014 4:22 pm

If you look in the VMCC register of machines the gearbox numbers are recorded.
All of the cruiser gearboxes listed start with "R", but the second letter is variously M,F.K.L.X.Y etc.so I think the second letter has more to do with build date than specification as the later alphabetic letters are towards 1940 and the earlier letters back to 1934, although there is nothing to say the gearbox is any different during this time, or that all letters of the alphabet were used ??? so am guessing the 4 speed type fitted to the cruiser has an R first letter identifier as the 3 speed boxes listed fitted to earlier machines seem to start with an "E". or "M" identifier, Similar 4 speed Albion gearboxes fitted to Royal Enfield 250's of the same period begin "R" and then have a variety of second letters ??

Thanks for the reply John. What you say ties in with the three boxes I have. Is the VMCC register available online? I am a member and have looked on their website but can't see a link to it there. Thanks again.

Vmcc register of machines

Post  piston 197 on Wed Jul 30, 2014 7:08 pm

The VMCC register of machines was issued in 1984 ( 3rd edition) by WE Hulme and as far as I know has never been updated since then, but was available from the VMCC in hard back form for many years ( and may still be ?)

Thanks John. I'll have a search around for one.
