Merlin Running. How does it sound???

Post  MrTweedy on Wed Jun 25, 2014 5:21 pm

Hello all.

Been tinkering with my Merlin over the last few weekends and it's now beginning to run better.
Thought I'd post this video and see what you all thought of how it's sounds running.  I'm not really sure of how it should sound so any advice would be great.
In the video it had just been round the the block so fairly warmed up with the air filter slide fully open.

Thanks in advance.

Matt

Merlin Running

Post  trickydicky on Mon Jul 18, 2016 6:59 pm

Hi,

Just watched your you tube clip and mine runs nothing like yours. Mine is raspy and I can not get it to tickover at all. Wish I could work out what I am doing wrong? It should be simple! I just posted another post on this topic too.

Hello TD.  That video was from 2 years ago, it's running a lot better now.  I've uploaded another video so you can hear the difference. See link below.

Well that is fantastic. Mine will not tickover at all like that. What approach did you take to get it to run like that?

Hello TD.

First of all, the Merlin is the first classic bike I've tinkered with in years, and the first two stroke, so it took a while to get it to this point. I've had lots of help from the good folk of this forum, that was the starting point.
Things I've done to the Merlin include...
Carb re-furbishment, fly wheel re-magnitised, new piston, barrel re-honed and painted, brake shoes re-lined all by Villiers Services.
I also removed the condenser and installed a Brightspark EasyCap replacement. After that, the rest is just tinkering with the timing, carb needle etc until it sounded right. I've bought a few books, read lots online and listened to other 10d engines online and tried to make mine sound similar.

Your backfiring sounds like the timing isn't right.

Hope this helps, just give me a shout if I can help with anything.

Regards

Matt
