1951 Merlin front and rear lights and speedo

Post  blackjak on Tue Oct 29, 2013 8:19 am

I have just collected my 1951 merlin (the usual basket case) and am missing a number of parts from what I can tell. The most concern I have is with it not having the front and rear lights and speedo. I will not be restoring it back to all original but would like to keep it in line with the bikes of the time. Can anyone advise where I should start looking for these parts apart from the usual ebay. I live in Perth Western Australia so finding parts locally is almost impossible. Could someone also look at item number 360372949290 on ebay uk and tell me if this is what I am looking for and will it fit?
cheers

Hi, here is a pic of 1951 Merlin, and also the type of speedo fitted. The rear light which was fitted to these bike back then, is not really suitable in todays traffic, I've looked at the one on eBay, it's a nice light, but it's not what I would fit. Mike

Thanks Mike
I was thinking of painting the chrome to suit the bike. Have you any other ideas as to what would suit? Also the front light shell there are a number of these for sale on ebay. What does the original shell look like. Does it have holes for other switches/gauges etc. Also if there is any one who has a manual they want to sell or let me have a copy of please contact me.

Hi some other owners have fitted a thing called a rearlamp support, see photo below, although that one has the wrong lamp. Mike

I have a spare rearlight "hump". It was an upgrade made for the earlier taillight assembly. The lens should be a Lucas 529, readily available, in both single filament & stop/tail.

Manuals are available through the club or online.

Headlamp shell should have a top fixing which retains a switch & ammeter, or just a switch, depends on which model (rectified lighting or direct).

Re: 1951 Merlin front and rear lights and speedo

I have now assembled my bike to see what all is missing in addition to what I posted previously and need some more help. I have a hexagonal bar approx. 12" long by 1/2". I believe this to be the bar the foot rests fit on to. It has a bend at about 7" along. I am thinking this is suppose to be a straight bar and was bent at some stage when the bike fell over. Is this correct? If not and it is suppose to have the bend does the bend go on the left or right side (as you sit on the bike) also up or down, facing forward or back. I also need a foot brake leaver, the bracket that attaches to the lever to hold the foot rests and the foot rests. Any help (templates or where I can get they) would be appreciated.
