colour confusion

Post  shazoak on Sun Oct 13, 2013 4:49 pm

Hi all.
Reading jasonmanaroman`s question from this morning about his bike frame numbers, has left me a bit confused.
I also have a falcon with a Frame no RM51284B.
I need educating here,if b is for blue, then what is the letter for black?.
I will soon be painting mine (black I thought being a 1950) so can anyone please advise.
Many thanks.Mark

Hello Mark. "B" suffix means the alternative/optional colour Blue. The standard colour being black, there was no frame suffix.
RM51284 should be a 1951 model, which is the first year blue was offered as optional.
Original Blue Barnetts are uncommon, so I hope you choose blue.
If your next question is what colour blue, I have just used PRU Blue, but opinion varies.

letter suffix

Post  piston 197 on Sun Oct 13, 2013 7:27 pm

I agree with Jack above, the falcons up to 54 have a suffix "B" for blue and nothing for standard black, but confusingly there are some falcon 58's out there with a "R" suffix ( no not a badly stamped "B" definitely an "R") nobody knows what this signified , presumably a modification ? confusingly again "R" was used as a suffix on 1959 bikes when a red colour was used as an option ?? I would welcome any thoughts on why the is an "R" suffix on some falcon 58's ???

colour confusion

Thanks for the reply.
The falcon was registered on the 27.11.1950
Because it has been modified/bodged to a trials trim over the years, I want to tidy her up properly, and paint her the correct colour.
Regards.

Falcon 81 Colour

Post  ChrisTurner on Mon Oct 14, 2013 6:53 am

I am restoring a Falcon 81 of 1959 vintage. The docs show the colour as black but there are traces of green on some of the tinware. Does anyone know if black would be correct (or optional) for this year and model? I am quite keen to keep it as original as possible but being a tad mean, have some black paint already which I could use. Besides, i think black with gold decals etc would look pretty classy. Chris

falcon 81 colours

Post  piston 197 on Mon Oct 14, 2013 7:19 am

The falcon 81 was available
1 all green no letters after the number (frame Nos ZN***** and AN*****)
2 green and white "W" after frame No( option for 1959 only frame Nos AN******W)
3 red "R" after the frame No ( option for 1959 0nly frame Nos AN*****R)
But if you want it black "it's a free world" ( allegedly)
