Falcon 74 spares list

Post  Jack Clegg on Mon Jun 24, 2013 10:00 am

Could some kind soul with a spares list for Falcon 74 please look up the part numbers of certain rear wheel parts?
I am trying to find out if they are the same as some parts on the Model 67.

These are the parts for which I need part numbers:-

REAR HUB FALCON (74)
Illustration No.3 - locknut 9/16 x 26 x 3/8 thick

ditto          No.4 - spacer 3/8 thick

ditto          No.25 - spacer 1/2 thick

Thanks. Jack

Part Numbers

Is this the 1960 Falcon that you are referring to?  If so, the part numbers are :

3 - Plain Nut 900051

4 - Distance Piece 001337

25 - (Do you mean 15 - I can't find a 25?) - Distance Piece 001335

Thank for that Chris, but it's the 1957 model 74 Falcon parts list I require the part numbers from. I have the instruction manual but it fails to give the part numbers.

As you can see, for some reason Part 25 isn't listed (although it is numbered in the picture). So i can't help with that one.

Same As

Post  ChrisTurner on Tue Jun 25, 2013 8:44 am

It looks like the part numbers I quoted are correct.  The one that is in doubt is the 1/2" distance piece which you say is number 25 but which my parts book indicates is number 15.  As you know the size of it, it should be easy to make one up anyway.  Hope that helps.  Chris

Many thanks to Chris & Kim for your efforts.
It looks like the whole system of part numbers was changed in 1955. Even parts which one might expect to be identical have a different part number.
So a fail on this track for me.

Just in case anyone can provide the required info, this is what is required:-

Model 67 Falcon 1954.

Part number 5158 - Rear Axle plain nut (width of nut required - it is 9/16 Cycle & there are two, one on each side of the hub, one for the brake plate & one for the speedo drive).

Part number 5522 - Rear Axle thick washer (width of washer required - again one was fitted on each side under the 5158 plain nuts).

It is unfortunate for me that FB appear to have started to give full dimensions of such assemblies from mid-1954 onwards, starting with the Series II journal front hub. The Series II front hub has all the dims one could ask for. Over the page is the rear hub assy with no dims whatsoever. Am still hoping that someone with a Model 67 with original rear hub assy can fill in these dims for me.
Many thanks again to Chris & Kim

Sympathy!

Post  ChrisTurner on Tue Jun 25, 2013 11:44 am

I do have some sympathy for your dilemma as I experienced similar issues when I built my bike which admittedly was a James but fundamentally similar in terms of the running gear.  I abandoned all hope of obtaining the correct parts and ultimately made them myself having taken measurements from the wheel and swinging arm when it was assembled.  I seem to recall that I subsequently made sets of wheel nuts and spacers for other owners from measurements supplied by them.  Not sure if it will help but if memory serves me right, I used metric hex bar stock for the nuts which is an exact equivalent to the original ww size and about 10% of the price.  I can't recall what size it was but it should be easy enough for you to work out.  Chris

Cheers Chris. Always up for some sympathy.

There's no problem obtaining 9/16ths cycle nuts, it's just the correct width I worry about. The nut & "thick washer" together control the chain & wheel alignment, so as long as I get the combined nut & washer thickness correct, I can use a standard 9/16th cycle nut & tailor the washer to suit. Will need that all important measurement between nearside rear fork & brake plate first though.

Update 30/6/13. From looking at another bike, it looks like a 7/16th thick nut & a 1/16th thick washer were the ones used on the 67 & the 58.
