Bought a F/B Cruiser 84

Post  Bob1557 on Mon May 20, 2013 7:06 pm

My problem is the old chap I bought it off can't find the old log book and the frame number on the headstock starts faint, it looks like 3BE 14564. The engine number is very clear M25T84 18349. I have downloaded the membership application and it asks for the frame and engine numbers, I would like to be sure that it is recorded properly from the beginning. It is in quiet good nick but the bike was rear ended in 1970's and the broken side panels were thrown so I have now got new ones from Bantam John, the rear support tubes will pull back up. The engine runs and goes up through the gears, I'm well chuffed.
So If you could identify the first two soft stamped number/letters I can become a member. ATB Bob.

Frame numbers

Post  piston 197 on Mon May 20, 2013 7:24 pm

Frame No's for the 84 were AE for 1959,BE & BBE for 1960 and CE for 1961,so i am guessing yours was a 1960 model with a frame No of BBE ?

Yes, I should of added the year he bought it new in 1960 to ride to work, amounting to a total of 4850 miles and after being ( in his words ) rammed up the rear, he then kept it in the back of the garage covered in carpet. Cheers Bob

Bob's 84

Post  tbird on Tue May 21, 2013 7:20 am

Hi Bob
Glad to see another 84 in the club,. you will see that there has been other 84's on this forum so you are in good hands.
Sounds as though you have struck gold with this one.
So Bantam John has side panels ?? are they new or second hand.??
The frame should not take much to straighten out as it is just a lightweight part of the frame.
Good luck with it and a picture of it when you can would be nice.

Regards

84 Rear Panels

Post  tbird on Tue May 21, 2013 7:38 pm

Hi JH
That is nice to know that he can make the panels just in case, but I would not like to deal with him.
I have not had any trouble with him in the past but a lot of members seam to have had.
I have also heard that he has the crash bars for the 84.
My 84 did not come with the leg shields or the crash bar as I understand they were an extra.

New side panels arrived.

Post  Bob1557 on Tue May 21, 2013 7:48 pm

Both left and right panels have arrived and I was not too excited when I saw them. But I suppose they are a good starting point, I can sand / file the edges level after they seem to have used a loose hacksaw blade to trim it back to the mould, there is no holes in place for fixing. Perhaps I'm just fussy.
In White gel coat they look startling. I will try to upload a photo. Bob.
