New member - 1958 197cc Trials

Hi there,

I am new to the forum and relatively new to classic bike ownership. I've been riding around 17 years, mainly as fast as possible. I've owned bikes as diverse as a Ducati 1000DS, a Kawasaki Z1000, Bandit 600, SV1000, ZZR600, GSX 250 (abysmal), GSX550 (the less said about that the better) and Z200, and my normal bike these days is a Triumph Daytona 955i. I am very gradually restoring an MZ TS125, but after getting addicted to Classic Bike magazine last year, I drunkenly purchased a Francis Barnett 197cc (Villiers) trials bike on Ebay in the winter last year.

It's not road legal and appears never to have been road registered. It's in good working order, and works well at low speeds (I'm guessing I've had it to about 25-30mph) on green lanes and even more challenging off road terrain around where I live in West Berkshire. I've slightly fallen in love with it, despite the fact that the forks (seals and I suspect springs too) are shot to bits.

I'd really welcome some advice and support regarding how to trace the history of the bike, and also what I should do with the forks. I'd like to know if there are any FB owners local to where I live also (Lambourn / Baydon).

Bizarrely, I took it up a track today and came across an old boy with a dog who stopped to chat. Turns out he had an FB that he bought new in 1953 for 99 - what are the chances?

Anyway, as I say, any help re front forks and general identification of my bike would be great.

Ben,post the frame and engine number on here and i will tell you as much as i can,if it is 1958 or which model i can let you know as much as i can work out, John H .(FBOC dating and Tech officer)

Thanks, John.

I'm not an expert in these matters but I found a number (much painted over) on the headstock which appears to be 4552 LB (the "L" might be wrong), and two numbers on the engine (nearside) one above the other: F34 and R7095/1 (the "R" might be a "B" but it has again been painted over a fair bit).

Do these sound like the right numbers or should I look elsewhere?

The numbers you are looking for should be "STAMPED IN" frame number on l?hand side of headstock,engine number either stamped in the crankcases or on an aluminium plate on the clutch case if 9E type.The numbers you quote make no sense,the engine and frame number you cive sound like casting numbers ,if they are raised i.e cast on they are not the frame and engine numbers,i will send you my email address in a p.m. might be wotrh sending me some pics??
