Restoration: Unknown

Post  MPeacock/92 on Tue May 22, 2012 10:09 am

Hi everyone,

I am kind of new to this so here we go.

I am currently restoring a 1958 francis barnett 197cc and have a slight problem. Every Francis Barnett ive seen seems to be green for some reason?
However, now mine is a bare frame I have noticed that the frame itself is actually purple. (the tank and side panels are red)
My question is this, are theese original colours for the time period or could it have been a respray at a later date?
This bike hasn't been on the road since 1981 and as you could imagine, I would like to take it back to its former glory. (Really dont want to screw it up) lol.
Thanks for your time reading this and hope you can help?

FB identified any colour options by letters after the frame number,if yours is right for 1958 then the frame number will be ZN****** if green and ZN***** W if green abd white ,there were other colour options in 1959 including red,if you give me your frame number ,i can tell you what year ,model and colour,JH

Then it is a 1958 model Falcon 81 and was green all over (with the exception of the wheel hubs and the chrome bits, and the gold lines on the tank ) JH

Matt, you will need some crankshaft main bearings, oil seals for the crank and chaincases and a gasket set for the engine which is a 10e. The piston is OK, you can replace the 2 rings if you like. The flywheel ignition coil is missing have you a spare?
